The evening had started perfectly. Tommy, our youngest, giggled as his marshmallow caught fire for the third time, and I laughed along, trying to help him out with the charred mess. “Mom, you’re terrible at this!” he teased with a grin, his gap-toothed smile glowing in the firelight.
