Harry knew naming daughter Lilibet was ‘disrespectful’
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their first child, Archie, in 2019, and their daughter, Lilibet, in 2021. Naming their daughter after Queen Elizabeth raised eyebrows, as they had already stepped back from royal duties. ‘Lilibet’ was the Queen’s childhood nickname, used only by close family, especially Prince Philip.
The name choice sparked controversy, with critics calling it presumptuous and disrespectful. Some royal experts believe Harry should’ve known it would cause tension, especially given their strained relationship with the Royal Family. Royal commentator Angela Levin called the move “rude,” noting the nickname was deeply personal.
Lilibet was born in California and met the Queen only once, during a private visit. Harry and Meghan reportedly wanted a photo of the moment, but the Queen declined, reportedly due to a bloodshot eye and wanting to keep it private.
While some sources claim the Queen was “touched” by the tribute, others suggest the gesture highlighted cultural differences between the UK and the US. Author Tom Quinn argues Meghan saw the name as a compliment, while in the UK, it was seen as inappropriate.
Despite the controversy, the couple said their intention was to honor the Queen and Princess Diana, as Lilibet’s middle name is Diana.
