Pope Leo XIV To Receive £500,000 Ring And Other Lavish Perks After Historic Appointment

On May 8, white smoke signaled that American Robert Prevost had been elected as the new pope. Now known as Pope Leo XIV, the 69-year-old is the first American pope in history. He was seen as a compromise candidate who may continue the legacy of Pope Francis, who appointed him a cardinal in 2023.

As head of the Catholic Church, which has over a billion followers, Pope Leo will take on many responsibilities. The Church will cover his living, travel, and security expenses. While popes receive a modest income of around £2,100 per month, their overall access to Church assets gives them significant resources.

One of the most valuable items he will receive is the ‘Ring of the Fisherman,’ a symbol of papal authority. A new ring is made for each pope, and Pope Leo’s is reportedly worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. He will also receive other religious items, such as the pectoral cross and ceremonial garments.

Though he will have access to the Popemobile and luxurious Vatican apartments, it is unclear if he will use them. Pope Francis, known for his humility, lived in simpler accommodations and wore modest clothing, setting a tone that Pope Leo may choose to continue.
