The only seven times Barack Obama shed tears during his eight years in office as US president

Emotional Moments in Barack Obama’s Life and Presidency

In 2012, twenty children and six educators were killed in the Sandy Hook school shooting. President Obama, visibly emotional, said, “We have wept with you,” offering his condolences to grieving families.

During his farewell speech in Chicago, Obama was moved to tears when speaking about his wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia, saying, “Of all that I’ve done, I’m most proud to be your dad.”

Obama also faced personal loss during his campaign when his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, died of cancer just one day before the 2008 election. “She has gone home,” he told supporters.

At the funeral of longtime Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye, Obama reflected on how Inouye’s legacy as a respected Asian American leader inspired his own political journey.

In January 2016, Obama became emotional again while introducing new gun control measures, recalling Sandy Hook: “Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad.” He had previously said his failure to pass stronger gun laws was his biggest frustration as president.

A lighter but powerful moment came in 2015 when Aretha Franklin performed “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” at a tribute to Carole King. The emotional performance, attended by the Obamas, went viral and became one of the most iconic musical moments of his presidency.
