4-Year-Old Girl Under Threat of Deportation from the US, Where She Receives Lifesaving Treatment for Her Rare Condition
Sofia Vargas, a 4-year-old girl with a life-threatening condition, faces deportation from the U.S., putting her health—and life—at risk.
Born prematurely in Mexico, Sofia suffers from short bowel syndrome, which prevents her body from absorbing nutrients. She relies on specialized treatments available only in the U.S., including Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). Doctors warn that any disruption to her care could be fatal within days.

Sofia and her parents, Deysi Vargas and her husband, entered the U.S. in July 2023 under humanitarian parole. Her condition improved dramatically with care at top U.S. hospitals, but in April 2025, the family was notified that their legal status had been revoked, with no explanation given. Their work permits were also canceled, creating financial hardship.

Despite no rule violations, the family has been asked to leave. Lawyers argue this was a mistake and are pushing to have their parole reinstated, noting that deportation could cost Sofia her life.

A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $25,000 to support the family during this crisis. Their future remains uncertain, but they hope to continue Sofia’s treatment and avoid a return to the limited care options in Mexico.
