A couple decides to adopt a baby with red skin who seemed to have a little chance of survival and raises her to become a true champion…

The Inspiring Story of Mui Thomas

Born in China with a rare and severe skin disorder, Mui Thomas faced immense challenges from the start. Abandoned by her biological parents due to her unusual appearance, her future seemed grim. Doctors predicted she wouldn’t survive infancy. But in 1994, Tina and Rog Thomas, despite being warned of the difficulties, decided to foster Mui. What started as a temporary arrangement turned into a lifelong commitment when they adopted her at age three.

Mui’s condition—Harlequin ichthyosis—is extremely rare and causes thick, cracked skin. She became one of only around 20 people worldwide known to live with it. Raised with love and resilience by Tina and Rog, Mui overcame countless social and physical challenges. School life was harsh—she was bullied, rejected, and even faced discrimination from adults. Yet, her spirit remained unbroken.

Despite being denied acceptance in many areas, Mui found strength through rugby, a sport introduced by her father. It became a turning point, giving her purpose and helping her embrace her differences. Today, Mui uses her platform, The Girl Behind the Face, to raise awareness, support others with visible differences, and spread a message of acceptance and strength.

Now in her 30s, Mui continues to defy expectations, proving that love, resilience, and determination can overcome even the toughest odds.
