Trump Unveils $175 Billion “Golden Dome” Space Defense Initiative

Former President Donald Trump has proposed an ambitious new missile defense system called the Golden Dome, a $175 billion initiative aimed at protecting the U.S. from advanced missile threats using space-based technology. Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, the system would use satellites, space-based interceptors, and advanced sensors to detect and neutralize ballistic missiles, hypersonic weapons, drones, and space-launched attacks at different phases of flight.

Led by U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein, the project has attracted interest from over 180 companies, including SpaceX, Palantir, and Anduril. Canada has also shown interest in participating as part of a NORAD upgrade.

Trump has proposed $25 billion in initial funding, with a projected total cost of $175 billion over 20 years—though some estimates suggest the final cost could be much higher. States like Alaska, Florida, Georgia, and Indiana are expected to benefit economically.

The plan faces criticism over its feasibility, cost, and potential to trigger a new arms race in space. China and Russia have condemned it, and some U.S. lawmakers are calling for more oversight and transparency.

If successful, the Golden Dome could represent a major leap in U.S. defense—but its future remains uncertain.
